Castlem: Chapter 4
Chapter 4:
Charlotte walked down the creaky wooden stairs again, this time to the kitchen. She was about open the kitchen door, when the sound of raised voices from inside brought her to a halt.
“No! Absolutely not! How could we live with ourselves knowing that we put that much pressure on a little girl like her? Besides, how do we know that she was the one who was supposed to be summoned?” shouted Mr. Fergison. This surprised Charlotte, for Mr. Fergison did not seem like one who could yell with such force and emotion.
“It’s like I told you before, she showed every sign of being the one. She even did and said the exact same things that we were told she would. On top of all of that, she was in the meadow at the right moment, and,” Victoria added in an even softer voice, “she was reading the last page of The Book. You know what I mean.”
“Oh, I see,” Mr. Fergison stated. “But even if she is the one, how is she supposed to learn everything before it’s too late? She’s new to this world, and has to learn about many important matters. How will she-”
“My dear, that is what Victoria and The Teacher are for. They will both teach her what she needs to know, and as we all know, The Teacher can make everything very simple,” interrupted Mrs. Fergison.
Charlotte did not want to hear anymore, so she quietly crept into the dining room that was across the hall. A few minutes later, the Fergisons and Victoria came, bringing food and conversation with them.
