Castlem: Chapter 7

Chapter 7
After Mrs. Fergison's voice was drowned out by the wind, Charlotte felt tiny tears rush to her eyes. She wondered whether they were from what Mrs. Fergison had said, or from the cold wind stinging her eyes. She forced herself to not look back, afraid of what she might see.
As Johnathon galloped through the forest with Charlotte and Victoria on his back, everything around them was just a blur.
"Victoria, what were those red lights that were outside the house, and what made the howl that we heard in the stable?" Charlotte yelled, trying to be heard over the wind.
"I'm not sure if it's safe to tell you right now," Victoria replied.
"What do you mean?"
"You'll find out what they were eventually, and you will regret ever wanting to know. But right now, be quiet. I don't want you to ruin your voice." After that, Charlotte traveled silently.
Once or twice she though she saw a few of the red lights, and heard a growl. However, she just passed them off as her imagination.
Charlotte and Victoria traveled until the sun rose in the sky. Charlotte had fallen asleep, and Victoria had to wake her up by yelling in her ear.
When Charlotte finally woke up (pixies can only yell so loudly), Victoria said, "Well, you could probably sleep through a battle. We need to travel for quite a while, if we are to reach our destination."
"What exactly is our final destination?" Charlotte asked, furious that she knew so little about this place.
"I cannot say."
"Why am I left in the dark about so much? I know nothing except what The Mystical Magic of Hidden Worlds taught me."
"And what exactly did that book say about Castlem?"
"Well, I know all the types of animals (except the ones she would not say the names of) and where most everything is. But I don't know what lies in the 'Dark Swamp'."
"It's better that you don't know, dear. There are some thing that you would be better off not knowing at all, but you will learn most of these things in time. You will be much safer not knowing anything. Trust me."
Charlotte sighed, "All right. But I want to know EVERYTHING by the time I leave (whenever that will happen)."
"If you leave," Victoria muttered mysteriously.
"WHAT??"
"Nothing. Johnathon, let's be off."
As Johnathon took off, Charlotte thought to herself,"There's something going on here that I don't know of, and I don't like it. I don't like it at all."

The next day, Charlotte and Victoria traveled the whole day. For some odd reason, Johnathon never became tired or slowed down, unless instructed by Victoria.
When Charlotte questioned why, Victoria replied, "He is a Changer."
"I read all about Changers in my book!" Charlotte exclaimed (Victoria had told her to not say the title out loud). "Is the fact that he doesn't tire his magical gift?"
"Yes, but do not speak so loudly."
"Why?"
Victoria flew close to Charlotte's ear and whispered "The trees have ears, and are listening to every word we say. If they overheard what we just discussed, them we are in great danger. Great danger indeed."

  1. The strange lines in the middle of the story mark that the scene of the story changes to another day, in a different part of the forest.
