Castlem: Chapter 5
Chapter 5
After a wonderful meal of chicken and potatoes, it was time for Charlotte to go to bed.
"Goodnight, dear Charlotte," Mr. and Mrs. Fergison said together.
"Goodnight, and let me thank you once again for your hospitality," Charlotte replied. She walked up the stairs and into the little guest bedroom. Sitting on the bed was a nightgown that Mrs. Fergison had laid out earlier.
Charlotte got ready for bed, and was about to fall asleep when she decided to have just one last peek out the window.
She slowly got up, crept to the widow, and looked out.
Everything was pitch-black. The only lights were the full moon, the stars, and strange red lights that seemed to be coming from the forest.
The red lights intrigued Charlotte. She was about to open the window and get a closer look, when she heard a low growl. She stepped a few paces away from the window, breathing hard. When she didn't hear the growl again, she peered out the window again.
This time the red lights seemed to be closer to the house. They were coming closer by the minute...
Charlotte, not wanting to see or hear anymore, almost ran into the bed. She lay there for a few minutes, trying to calm herself. Her heart was beating extremely fast, and she couldn't control her breathing.
Finally, Charlotte's heart-rate and breathing went back to normal, and she sat up in bed.
"Now is a time for serious concentration on the recent occurrences," Charlotte told herself. So she took a few moments to ponder what had happened to her.
A short while later, Charlotte began to feel homesick and lost. She had been pulled into this strange world, full of strange creatures, against her own free will. Right then she could have been sleeping peacefully in her own bed, in her own house, surrounded by her own family. But she was trapped in a strange bed, in an unknown house, surrounded by people she had only known for a few hours.
As sleepiness overcame panic and sadness, Charlotte's last conscious thought was, "What if I never get home?"
