Castlem Chapter 11
Chapter 11
"Victoria," Charlotte asked as they rode through the sea of meadow-grass, "what do you know about Gade?"
"Only that all who have entered never come out," Victoria replied mysteriously. "Many great and powerful people have been placed under the spell of Gade and its master. Nobody knows what happens to those who go there, and those who do know never get a chance to tell us. Was there nothing about Gade in your book?"
"There may have been. I only read it once before I came here."
"Well, try to find a section on Gade in your book."
Charlotte looked through The Mystical Magic of Hidden Worlds until she found a paragraph about Gade. "I found it!" she exclaimed to Victoria.
"Good. Now read it out loud, please."
"All right. 'Not much is known concerning the city of Gade, other that its location and the inhabitants. Gade is placed near the south of the Great Meadow near the Forest of Bandits (see map on next page).' Why is it called the 'Forest of Bandits'?" Charlotte asked.
"Because a long time ago, that forest was ruled by bandits. No traveler was safe from them, other than a few people who could keep them in line. Please continue reading."
"'The people who live in Gade are not seen very often. They very rarely venture outside the protective walls of their domain, and when they do it is only in the matter of warfare. For the Gadeans are a warlike people. Anyone who enters their walls are never seen again. Beware the Gadeans.' That's an odd sort of ending, don't you think?"
"No. The Gadeans love war. If you ever see more than one of them outside of Gade, trouble is about. They will fight for whoever will treat them well, even if it means fighting for the wrong side. But if they are on your side, they are the most loyal soldiers ever."
"But, when has there ever been war here? Everybody and everything seem to cooperate in perfect harmony."
"That's just the appearance. You remember Ebbsa, right?"
"The tiny master of Gade? Of course."
"He's not actually the master of Gade.Their true ruler was killed and Ebbsa stole the throne from the rightful heir. That's when the disappearances started taking place."
"But why does Ms. Penner mention them in her book?"
"Because Ebbsa has been ruling Gade for over two millenia."
"Oh." Charlotte then yawned.
"Are you tired? I'm so sorry, I've kept you up quite late. We'll stop here and you can get some rest."
"Thank you." Charlotte got down from Johnathon and fell asleep on the soft grass.
